Star the dog was found wandering in Oyster Pond by Melody Sober during
her vacation here in November. Star was missing half her
hair and was covered with sores. Melody became attached to the
dog and immediately took her to St.Maarten Veterinary Clinic for
treatment with the help of Animal Welfare Foundation volunteers.
During the time Star was being treated, Sober visited the clinic
every day to take her for a walk. Leaving the dog to recover ,
Sober headed home to Petaluma, California. She returned on Wednesday
for one
day just to pick up Star and take her home with her. Sober told
The Daily Herald she had been touched by the dog's bright eyes
and friendliness. She named her Star because of a story that tells
of a boy who was walking on the beach covered with starfish and
decided to throw as many as he could back into the ocean. He was
approached by a manwho asked why he was throwing the starfish back,
because it made no sense seeing that more would be washed up. The
boy told the man it made a difference to the ones he threw back.. "So
she is my starfish; that is why I named her Star. I may not be
able to save all of the animals, but I can make a difference to
this one." Picture: Star before and after treatment.
