1st quarter down, 2 to go (3 quarters at stanford, I know it doesn’t make sense)

sleepy2.jpg

So this is what I do now that finals are over. I sleep. I sleep in the car, I sleep in the movies, I sleep for 12 hours every night (the picture is actually from the ride home from Big Game (Cal vs Stanford), which sadly, we lost. I am the one passed out on my friend’s lap.). I never thought I could sleep this much. I’ve made up all of the sleep that I didn’t get during finals week, and then some. But it feels good, almost as good as it feels to be done with my first quarter at Stanford. Don’t get me wrong, I love school, but the hectic pace of school makes break that much better. I don’t have my grades yet, but I think I did pretty well.

My mom wants me to tell you all about what I do in school…so here it is. I took 4 classes this quarter. They were Art of Living (literature/philosophy), Virtue of Vice and Vice of Virtue: Rhetoric of Criminality, Hindi, and a little computer class that our RCC (resident computer consultant) taught. My favorite books from my lit class were Song of Solomon (I can’t figure out how to underline or italicize) by Toni Morrison, The Gay Science by Nietzsche, and Fear and Trembling by Kierkegaard. Hindi is fun but hard, and my rhetoric class was by far the most work-intensive class I have ever taken.

But its all over now and I have three whole weeks to relax, catch up on Grey’s Anatomy (Sigh…McDreamy) and Battlestar Galactica, read some good books that are not required, get caught up in the fashion world, and spend some quality time with my family and my boyfriend, and go to Mexico!! For as long as I can remember we have gone to Mexico for winter break, because my dad is a baby when it comes to the cold and he would drag us all down south the minute it got cold enough to see your breath in the air. I have since realized that I inherited his fear of the cold, so I am looking forward to some sand, sun, and warm water. I hope everyone has a great winter, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, and happy other winter holidays!

    Hi, Amy –

Annelies, who is 3, says your nachos are very yummy. She also says there’s glad there’s only good food in them because it’s healthy and it won’t make her die. Actually she wants more, but too bad for her because I ate the rest. Ah, parental love.

Thanks for your family’s food –

    Namaste Amy,

Good to know that you’re going to get a wonderful break in Mexico. I’m learning Hindi too and you’re right, although it is fun, it’s difficult too. I’m longing to visit India and experience all it has to offer. Hopefully someday soon, I’ll be able to get there.

Well, take care. Looking forward to hearing about your trip.

    Hello Amy,

I am not in college, I’ve already done that route, but I am a vegetarian. I’m so glad you maintain a blog. Actually, I’m still not quite sure what the difference between a blog and guestbook are, but hopefully I won’t do or say the wrong thing. It’s also nice to hear your dog is also vegetarian. That must be rare among canines. Actually, I have two dogs myself, Wolfgang and Ludwig, both are dachshunds and they do like to maintain their longevity with an occacional hot dog. Do you have any suggestions for an alternate form of meat for my dogs? Thanks for any suggestions. Good luck in school.

Hello Amy. In 1952-53 I too was a Freshman at Stanford (Encina
Hall). I absolutely *love* your Palak Paneer. It goes well with the
book that I am reading: “Sacred Games” by Vikran Chandra
(who teaches at UC, Berkeley). Thank you for broadening my
horizons. I remember a man from India who was a visitor at
Stanford in 1953. He was in a natural state of bliss. Happiest
and most peaceful person I have ever met. Thanks.
Your friend, John Saunders (Stanford Class of 1956).

Hi Amy, this is very nice, well written and fun to follow. To your comments on quarters. There really are 4 .. summer counts. both my undergrad and graduate school was on quarters, not so common today I think. I teach at a University and we are on semesters. I much prefer the quick pace and quick turn over of a 10 week quarter with 3 a year versus the long drawn out time line of a 15 or 16 week semester. I tell you, you can really start dragging about week 12!!!! Where as in quarters you are just in week 2 of a new class! Much Better! IMHO … GO BUCKEYES! My favorite dish is Mattar Paneer!

Thanks now get back to work studying!

Hello from a new vegetarian and a fellow stressed-out college student! I’m a grad student at the U of Miami and it is kicking my butt! Anyway, I just became veg about 2 months ago, still getting used to it but I love your family’s food! Thanks for making the transition easier! Just randomly dropped in to say hello while searching for veg recipes. Best of luck at Stanford; I’m sure you will do great! My little brother is a freshmen as well. :)

My school is on quarters, too. People are always confused when I talk about (everyone else around here is on semesters). I’m having a struggle at my college, I can’t even imagine what Stanford would be like! I remember in high school I thought I was so smart.. college got rid of that attitude really quick!

    Lots of luck (and sleep!),
    Beth

    Amy -

Just stumbled on your blog after seeing an ad for “Amy’s” at yogajournal.com.

Listen, don’t sweat the football stuff. Its not worth it. I went to Cal when Stanford had John Elway as their quarterback. When the great yogis and sages say that “all things must pass”, they weren’t talking about “third and long.”

You are at a great school with an opportunity to learn from great teachers along-side great students. So have fun, learn lots, and then go out and help make the world a better place.

    Amy,
I am wondering if you are the Amy I went to grade and middle school with. I would love to hear your response.
I think about you often and how your doing. Let me know if you are my Amy from school! Bobbi
