What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, which is a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other foods into energy.
There are two different illnesses that are known as Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Type 1 diabetes your body makes little or no insulin. One or more insulin injections must be taken every day depending on your diet.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, your body can’t properly use the insulin that it makes. These individuals typically have higher than normal amounts of insulin in their blood, but their bodies resist its blood-sugar regulating action. Most cases of Type 2 diabetes can be treated with diet, exercise, and oral medications. However, in some cases, insulin injections are also needed.
The symptoms of diabetes include feeling tired, excessive thirst and urination, feeling unusually hungry, being moody, weight loss, blurry vision, and getting more infections than usual.
Although the cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles in Type 2 diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 18.2 million people in the United States, or 6.3% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 13 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 5.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.

Exercise... it's not just for weight loss

Experts are urging those with type 2 diabetes to exercise, but not only for the reasons you think. Of course everyone knows when you exercise you burn calories. Burning calories can help with weight loss. Sometimes weight loss isn't as speedy as we'd like when exercising. This can cause people to give up on exercise as they become frustrated with the return for the physical effort put in. Experts say instead of focusing on the scale when you exercise, concentrate on the many other benefits of exercise. These benefits include:
- improved blood sugar control
- increased HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol)
- improved blood pressure
- increased fitness, strength and flexibility
- enhanced well-being and personal attitude
Exercise also reduces risk of heart disease and death. Experts believe the main reason those with diabetes should exercise is to reduce risk of heart disease and death from major diseases. Does it work? The Center for Disease Control (CDC) studied over 2800 people with diabetes to evaluate the long-term effects of exercise (walking) on mortality. Subjects were studied over an 8 year period. The CDC found walking extended life of subjects regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, body mass index, period of time since diagnosis, and whether complications were experienced. Those who walked at least 2 hours per week reduced their risk for heart disease death by 34%. Those walking 3-4 hours per week reduced mortality by 54%. Walking at a moderate intensity decreased risk for death. Blair, S. & Church, T. The Importance of Physical Activity and Cardiorespiratory Fitness for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes. I've been a vegetarian for more than 20 years, and I've been a fan of your products for at least the last 5-6 years. My favorite has always been the burritos, but I also like the broccoli pot pie and the enchiladas. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! I'm self-employed and am often too busy during the day to take a long lunch break, so I love that I can go to the microwave and be ready to eat in just a couple minutes.
A few weeks ago, I was diagnosed with diabetes in a big, bad way. As I started learning more about counting carbs, I worried that your foods might be too high in carbs for me. Much to my sheer delight, my nutritionist assured me that I can still enjoy your products! My freezer is now fully stocked with plenty of my favorites.
Thank you so, so much for producing such healthy foods. It's such a comfort knowing your foods still fit into my new and even healthier life!
Thank you so much for making your whole-wheat pizza. It does not raise my blood sugar like regular white crust pizza! It is so good. I have been a Type I Diabetic on insulin for my whole life and I have found your delicious foods only recently. Thanks for your delicious product.

I LOVE your Mushroom/Olive pizza and your cheese enchiladas. For health reasons (I have Type II diabetes) I have given up eating beef, chicken, pork, and turkey. My dietician recommended I try your products. I LOVE THEM. I only wish I could find all of them in one store. But, it's worth driving around to find what I love!

I'm a type 2 diabetic and truly enjoy your products. Since being diagnosed 2 years ago I have lost over 120 pounds and have gained energy and a feeling of responsibility by eating responsibly. My sugar levels have been normal and my cravings for unhealthy food has disappeared. One of my favorites (besides the chili) is your Thai Coconut soup with a total carb count of 16. My success is due in a great part to your high quality products.
Thank you so much, Rick Rasmussen
I am an Insulin dependant diabetic (Type 1) and I was diagnosed 13 years ago. It is a difficult disease to manage but through your products I have found that I can manage my love for animals and my blood sugars. The Integrity of your products is noticed and I will always support your products.
I never knew your Chili was Vegan. I am pleasantly surprised that you can gain that much texture and flavor in a Vegan meal. No babies were harmed!
Thank you for your caring nature and your passion. Your products are amazing and I will always recommend them and use them! Thank You for your kindness and concern. If I can help, please let me know!
I am a diabetic, who is always trying to keep my blood glucose levels under control. I've never been a fan of frozen meals, but decided to give your brand a try. I'm sure glad I did. When I eat your frozen meals for lunch, I get excellent readings, without taking a lot of insulin. And, just as important, the food is excellent. The Broccoli Pot Pie, Shepherd's Pie, Vegetable Pot Pie and the Pesto Tortellini Bowl have all worked well
for me. Thanks for helping me control my diabetes.

I am a 74 year old, diabetic man who went on a diet about 4 months ago.
Although I have lost over 50 lbs struggling with calorie count and diet menu, it has become a real problem to vary my menu. Three weeks ago I found Amy's products in our local store. I tried a couple of the bowls. What a shock! They tasted great. Each product I have tried is below 500
calories. Perfect for a 1500 daily calorie. count. Now, I am once again excited about maintaining my diet. Amy's for me! Thank you so much.
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for providing such wonderful products for people like me seeking a healthier lifestyle.
I am a Diabetic and like most diabetics have high cholesterol as well and I was so frustrated with my food choices until I found your products.
I now am a devoted customer and buy your products weekly. Thank you again for doing such a fantastic job!
From Elizabeth Clark
You've done an astonishing job with this product (the Roasted Vegetable Pizza), so I thought you'd like the positive feedback. I have insulin dependent diabetes and, generally, pizza--even very good organic pizza--is one of the worst foods I can eat. With yours I have to take substantially less insulin to prevent a low blood sugar emergency. Hurrah!
From Ronald Jorgensen
Thank you for introducing your Light in Sodium soups and frozen meals. As someone with a family history of diabetes, I watch my sodium intake carefully. Your new low-sodium foods will definitely help me with that and I will definitely buy as many as you can pump out! (Well, not THAT many, but certainly a good amount.)
From Matthew D
I have been a diabetic with an eating disorder for over ten years. Recently I decided to get my act together and exercise and get my eating under control, while learning how to inject insulin and to take the correct doses with food. My therapist and I decided, that while I am good cook, I am also a BIG eater - I have no portion control. What we agreed was that I would buy every Amy's product imaginable (never tried them but knew they were not made with junk) and use them for my meals and adding a salad.
It has been great! Not only do I love your products, but having all the nutritional information makes it so much easier to control my diabetes. I eat just what is there and feel satisfied. And I feel satisfied because your food tastes yummy, like I am cheating...
So thank you for helping me, finally , at 45, begin to live a healthier life.
